If you're thinking about moving to Greenville, North Carolina, you can find plenty of information online about home prices, schools, jobs and things to do.
But sometimes what you really want to know is much simpler:
What is it actually like to live there?
I've called the Greenville area home for more than 30 years, and I've watched the city change quite a bit during that time. I've seen new neighborhoods appear, restaurants and businesses open, different parts of town grow, and older areas begin to receive new attention.
Greenville isn't perfect—no city is. But after all these years, I'm still happy to call it home. In fact, if I ever decided to leave Greenville, I would probably just move to one of the surrounding communities here in Pitt County.
So rather than give you another list of statistics, let me tell you a little about the Greenville I know.
Greenville Is Easier to Get Around Than You Might Think
I sometimes describe Greenville as one big circle.
That's obviously not how you'll see it drawn on a map, but it's how the city feels to me after living here for so long.
Many of our major roads intersect with smaller roads throughout the city, so even if you make a wrong turn, chances are you'll eventually come across a road you recognize and find your way back to where you're going.
Another thing I appreciate is that most of the places I need aren't terribly far apart.
When traffic is light, I can often get from one side of Greenville to another in about 15 minutes. When traffic is heavier, that same trip might take 20 to 30 minutes. Those are my personal estimates rather than official commute times, but they give you an idea of how Greenville feels in everyday life.
For someone coming from a much larger metropolitan area, that may be one of the pleasant surprises of living here.
Greenville Still Has a Sense of Community
One of my favorite things about Greenville isn't a building or a particular neighborhood.
It's watching people come together.
I've noticed it especially during community events. For those few hours, it sometimes seems as though people have left their worries and stress at home. You see people laughing, smiling, talking, eating and simply enjoying one another's company.
That's something I've always appreciated about living here.
One place where you'll see that community spirit is Greenville Town Common. Located along the Tar River beside the Uptown district, the 21-acre park connects with Greenville's greenway system and hosts concerts, festivals and other community events.
It's one thing to read an events calendar. It's another thing to actually be there and see the community enjoying itself.
Greenville Has Grown—A Lot
One of the biggest changes I've noticed over the years is the amount of residential development.
There are now subdivisions throughout the Greenville area offering very different types of homes and price ranges. Some buyers are interested in established neighborhoods with mature landscaping and homes that have been there for decades. Others prefer newer construction and more recently developed communities.
That variety is one reason I don't think someone moving here should decide where they want to live based solely on the word Greenville.
Different parts of Greenville can feel quite different from one another, and nearby communities such as Winterville, Ayden and Grimesland give home buyers even more options.
We'll be exploring those communities and individual neighborhoods much more closely here on Pitt County Living.
Some Older Areas Are Changing, Too
Growth isn't limited to brand-new subdivisions.
I've also noticed changes in some older parts of Greenville that haven't always received the same attention as newer areas. I've seen attractive smaller homes being built in some of these locations and areas that look cleaner and better cared for than they did in years past.
The City of Greenville has also documented neighborhood revitalization efforts, including programs in West Greenville involving rehabilitation of existing homes, redevelopment of vacant or deteriorated properties, infrastructure improvements and the creation of additional housing opportunities. I think that's worth talking about because Greenville isn't a finished product. Some areas are changing, and what someone remembers about a particular part of town from years ago may not tell the whole story today.
When you're considering any neighborhood, I recommend spending time there yourself, researching the things that matter to you and deciding whether the location fits your individual needs.
You Have Plenty of Choices When It Comes to Food
Another change I've watched happen is the growth in Greenville's restaurant scene.
Years ago, we simply didn't have the number or variety of restaurants that we have today.
Now, whatever I'm in the mood for, I can usually find it somewhere around Greenville—Mexican, Italian, Chinese, soul food, country cooking and plenty of other choices.
And that's one of the topics we're going to have some fun with on Pitt County Living.
I don't want this site to only tell you where houses are for sale. I want to talk about the places where we actually eat, shop, walk, spend a Saturday afternoon and meet friends.
Because that's part of choosing where you want to live, too.
Outdoor Recreation Is Easier to Find Than You May Realize
Greenville also has more outdoor recreation than someone unfamiliar with the area might expect.
According to the City of Greenville Recreation and Parks Department, the city maintains more than 36 parks and recreational facilities. These include community and recreation centers, playgrounds, athletic facilities, Wildwood Park, River Park North and Town Common.
The city also reports approximately nine miles of greenway for walking, jogging, bicycling and enjoying nature.
Town Common is especially nice because it sits beside the Tar River and connects with the greenway system. You'll find walking areas, river access, an amphitheater, playground space and places where you can simply sit and enjoy being outside.
For me, though, outdoor life in Greenville isn't only about designated parks. In many of the residential areas I'm familiar with, mornings can be peaceful, and you'll often see people out walking and starting their day.
ECU Is a Big Part of Greenville

You can't really explain Greenville without talking about East Carolina University.
ECU brings students, employees, athletics, education and a college-town influence to the city. For fall 2026, East Carolina University reported total enrollment of 27,206 students.
You'll notice the university's influence around town, particularly during the school year and around major university events.
But Greenville isn't only a college town.
It's also an important regional center for healthcare, which brings us to another major part of life here.
Healthcare Is an Important Part of Greenville
Greenville is home to ECU Health Medical Center, the flagship teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
ECU Health reports that the medical center has 974 licensed beds and provides inpatient and outpatient services to more than 1.4 million people across 29 counties.
That makes healthcare important to Greenville not only because of access to medical services, but also because ECU Health and East Carolina University are such visible parts of the local community.
One Thing I Would Like to See Greenville Improve
I told you at the beginning that I wasn't going to pretend Greenville was perfect.
One thing I would personally love to see is more entertainment geared toward teenagers and younger people.
I've heard young people say there isn't enough for them to do here. Greenville does offer parks, youth athletics, recreation programs and other organized activities, so there certainly are options available.
But I'd still like to see more places where young people can simply gather and have fun—perhaps something like a skating rink or additional entertainment venues geared toward them.
Hopefully that's something we'll see more of as Greenville continues to grow.
Greenville or One of the Surrounding Pitt County Communities?
Here's something I think people relocating to Greenville should know:
Don't limit your home search to Greenville just because Greenville is the city you've heard of.
Depending on what you're looking for, you may also want to explore Winterville, Ayden, Grimesland and some of the other communities throughout Pitt County.
That's particularly important when you're house hunting because different communities offer different housing styles, lot sizes, price points, locations and overall atmosphere.

So, What's It Really Like Living in Greenville, NC?
For me, Greenville is home.
It's a city that has grown tremendously since I first came here, but there are still moments when it feels like a much smaller community.
It's being able to get across town without spending an hour in the car.
It's watching new neighborhoods develop while older areas begin changing.
It's having more restaurants to choose from than we used to.
It's taking an early-morning walk through a quiet neighborhood.
It's seeing people gather at community events and, at least for a little while, leave the stresses of everyday life behind them—laughing, talking and enjoying each other's company.
And maybe the best way I can explain how I feel about Greenville is this:
If I ever moved away, I wouldn't want to go very far. I'd probably just find another place to call home somewhere here in Pitt County.
