Senior citizens

By Denise Davis, REALTOR® | Fresh Start Realty | Serving Greenville & Pitt County, North Carolina

Pitt County has six skilled nursing facilities, four licensed memory care units and one life plan community with every level of care on a single campus. Most are in Greenville, with nursing homes in Ayden and Farmville as well.

All six nursing homes provide rehabilitation therapy, so a short stay after surgery or a hospital visit can usually happen close to home.

This guide lists each option by care type, with addresses, phone numbers and links. If you are thinking about retiring in Pitt County or helping a parent find care in Greenville, start with the care level that fits today. Then call, ask questions and tour.

What Is the Difference Between Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing?

The main difference is how much daily and medical help a person needs. In North Carolina, assisted living is licensed as an adult care home, so you will see that term on state records.

Care level

Best for

What is included

Independent living

Active adults who want less upkeep

A private apartment or cottage, plus activities and often meals. Little or no hands-on care.

Assisted living (adult care home)

People who need help with bathing, dressing or medications

Housing, meals, 24-hour supervision and personal care.

Family care home

People who want assisted living in a small, residential setting

The same kind of help, in a licensed home with 2 to 6 residents.

Memory care (special care unit)

People living with Alzheimer's or another dementia

A secured setting, staff trained in dementia care and structured routines.

Skilled nursing (nursing home)

People who need nursing care around the clock

Licensed nurses, medical monitoring and long-term care.

Short-term rehab

People recovering from surgery, a stroke, a fall or an illness

Physical, occupational and speech therapy, usually for days or weeks, with a goal of going home.

When you call about rehab, ask how many days a week therapy is provided, who your point of contact will be and what happens if you need more time.
